Ford engines: What you should know about Ford engines
.
Ford Motor Company is one of the world’s largest car manufacturers. Many Ford models are offered around the globe. They are available with different engines depending on the model series. It is not uncommon for engines with the same engine codes to be installed in several model series at the same time.
Whereas in the past Ford focused on large-displacement engines with four or six cylinders, today’s engines are primarily smaller-displacement and turbocharged. In addition, modern Ford turbocharged engines often have one fewer cylinder than earlier engines from the same manufacturer. This offers many advantages, such as consistent performance with lower fuel consumption.
Ford engines are available in many different variants as petrol or diesel, with or without turbocharging. While the smallest Ford engine has three cylinders, the V-engines of the American Ford models shine with up to eight cylinders. Ford’s best-known engine types include the turbocharged EcoBoost engines, the proven Duratec petrol engines and the economical Duratorq diesel engines.
Ford engine designations explained simply
Ford assigns separate designations for its engines in addition to different engine codes. Many Ford engines therefore have a special name so that they can be easily assigned to different categories.
- Ford Duratec: Ford engines with the Duratec designation were offered in several variants as four-cylinder, five-cylinder and six-cylinder. The Duratec engines are mostly designed as naturally aspirated petrol engines, and were fitted, for example, in the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, or Ford Mondeo models. Engines purchased by Ford from other car manufacturers have also been named Duratec.
- Ford Duratorq: Engines named Duratorq are exclusively diesel engines. The engines are available in different versions, each with a different displacement and power output. Duratorq diesels were and are produced as in-line engines with four and five cylinders as well as V6 and V8. This type of engine is found in the Ford Mondeo, the Ford Transit and the Ford Kuga, among others. In addition, this type of diesel engine was also installed in brands such as Citroën.
- Ford EcoBlue: Under the EcoBlue designation, Ford develops and sells modern four-cylinder diesels that are considered to be particularly low in pollutants. The diesel engines are available in different versions as naturally aspirated engines with common rail injection, with turbocharger or as bi-turbo. These engine variants are used, for example, in the Ford Ranger, the Ford Transit or the Ford Edge.
- Ford EcoBoost: The name EcoBoost is given to petrol engines that are particularly economical and environmentally friendly due to their design. In addition to consistent downsizing, this is achieved primarily through the use of turbocharging. EcoBoost petrol engines are installed in different variants as three-cylinder or four-cylinder engines, for example in the Ford Fiesta, in the Ford B-MAX or in the Ford Transit Courier.
- Ford Fox: The name Fox was used to describe the smallest EcoBoost engine with three cylinders. This Ford engine with 1 litre displacement was installed in various Ford models such as the Ford Fiesta or the Ford Ka.
.
- Ford Dragon: The Ford Dragon engine is also part of the EcoBoost family. It is a turbo petrol engine with three cylinders, which is a further development of the smaller EcoBoost engines. The engines are installed, for example, in the Ford Fiesta ST and the Ford Focus.
Ford engines – these are the different types
Depending on the model and engine type, Ford uses different engine technologies. Here is the most important info on some engine designations.
- TI-VCT: A Ford TI-VCT engine has variable camshaft timing. Depending on the load response, TI-VCT engines can hydraulically adjust both camshafts to increase engine efficiency. This type of engine was or is installed, for example, in the Ford Focus and the Ford EcoSport.
- TDCI: Under the designation TDCI, Ford offers Duratorq diesel direct injection engines with common rail technology and turbocharging. These diesels are considered to be particularly low-emission and fuel-efficient. These engines are installed, for example, in the Ford C-MAX or in the Ford Ranger.
- HE: The Ford HE engine was marketed as part of the Duratec engine family, with the HE designation standing for Homogenous Engine, which was intended to emphasise the worldwide use of this engine type. The inline four cylinders with aluminium engine block were installed in various versions in the Ford Focus or also in the Ford Mondeo.

Buying the right Ford engine
.
Ford’s internal combustion engines are considered to be of high quality and long-lasting. Nevertheless, even with this manufacturer, there are certain parts that break down more quickly than others. This is mainly due to how the respective car is used. For example, an EcoBoost engine can quickly break down due to downsizing when overloaded. Certain Duratorq models from the Ford Focus are also considered susceptible to engine damage. When a diesel in a Ford Transit breaks down prematurely, it is often a matter of usage.
If the Ford engine in the car is defective, often only another replacement will help. Used Ford engines offer a quick remedy at a reasonable price. Since the engine and gearbox have to be separated and reassembled during the replacement, the assembly requires appropriate expertise depending on the vehicle.
At autoparts24.eu you will find numerous car parts from Autorecycling for various brands. After selecting the required spare parts, the corresponding offers are clearly listed. In addition to the exact price, the overview also provides information about the mileage in kilometres at which the components were removed. Ford engines are usually delivered within a few working days.
