Ford gearboxes: What you should know about Ford gearboxes
Ford manufactures vehicles for the European market with both manual and automatic transmissions. The gearboxes used come from suppliers such as Getrag, Magna and ZF, or are developed by the manufacturer itself. While most Ford transmissions are robust and durable, Powershift automatic transmissions, for example, can become a problem if they are poorly maintained and have a high mileage due to jerky gearshifts or oil loss.
Ford manual gearbox
Unlike other manufacturers, Ford in Germany continues to rely on the manual transmission. This type of transmission, in which the driver selects the gear using the classic clutch and gear stick, is mostly installed as a 6-speed transmission at Ford. Only the Fiesta model with the weakest engine will also be available as a 5-speed version in 2022.
Ford’s manual transmission design differs depending on whether the part in question is installed in a front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive vehicle. While many Ford cars with transversely mounted engines have a cable shift, the gear stick in the Mustang performance vehicle is directly coupled to the transmission. Manual transmissions can be found, for example, in the Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Puma or Ecosport.
Ford automatic transmission
- Powershift automatic: The Powershift automatic transmission is a dual-clutch transmission that can be found as Powershift 6DCT in many Ford models such as the Fiesta, the Mondeo, the Galaxy or even the Kuga. As a 6-speed direct-shift gearbox, the transmission has a double clutch, with each clutch responsible for one half of the gearbox.
- Ford 8-speed automatic transmission: For medium-sized passenger cars, Ford relies on automatic torque converter transmissions with eight gears. These transmissions work with a torque converter and can be found, for example, as the 8F35 automatic in the Focus or S-MAX. In the Edge, Kuga, Galaxy or Mondeo models, the 8-speed automatic transmission can also be found as the 8F40 variant.
- Ford 10-speed automatic transmission: The 10-speed automatic transmission is designed to make driving more efficient. Fuel consumption is reduced while comfort remains the same. Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmissions were developed together with the manufacturer GM. They are installed, for example, as type 10R80 in the Mustang or Ranger.
Ford transmission for electric vehicles
In electric vehicles such as the Mustang Mach-E, the manufacturer installs compact drive units in which the transmission is already integrated. Depending on the version, one or two drives are installed directly in the area of the axles. These are transmissions with a fixed transmission ratio and one gear. The task of the transmission in the electric car is to convert the engine speed into a suitable speed for driving the wheels.
Buy and install a used Ford gearbox
If the gearbox is defective and the warranty has expired, it is sometimes worth the effort replacing the entire gearbox with a suitable original part. Skilled car mechanics with a certain amount of experience are happy to carry out such repairs themselves. They use used spare parts from car recyclers, when the spare parts are reasonably priced. Information such as the gearbox code can often be found on a sticker on the gearbox block. Autoparts24 also offers the possibility of finding suitable car parts by category or information such as the key number.
