The gearbox code: What does the code mean and where can it be found on the gearbox?

Depending on the model and engine, car manufacturers install different gearboxes. To make it clear which variant is involved, all gearboxes are given a unique gearbox code. If a replacement gearbox is needed after gearbox damage, the matching gearbox can be easily assigned by using the gearbox code.

What is a gear code?

The gearbox code is a number or a combination of numbers and letters that contains important information about the respective gearbox. Even visually identical gearboxes from the same manufacturer with the same number of gears can have different internal structures. For example, the gear ratio can differ depending on the model, and thus the compatibility with the engine installed in each case.

There is no uniform scheme for the composition of the gearbox number. At Volkswagen, for example, the gearbox code begins with the gearbox code letter, followed by a number. For other manufacturers, the gearbox number may begin with an indication of the place of manufacture or provide information about the type of gearbox. The gearbox code almost always contains the year of manufacture and the production date of the gearbox.

Where can I find the gear code?

The gearbox code is usually stamped or engraved directly on the gearbox housing. Often, however, the code can only be easily seen from below. A lifting platform is a useful aid for identifying the gearbox code on the car.

The exact position of the code differs depending on the car manufacturer and often also within the model range. If the gearbox code is not present on the underside of the gearbox, it may also be stamped on the side of the gearbox housing or on the clutch bell.

Depending on the manufacturer, the transmission code can also be found in the vehicle documents. In the case of Volkswagen, for example, the code is also recorded on a sticker in the boot or elsewhere. Specialist workshops can often determine the gearbox code from the chassis number.

This is how the gearbox code helps in the search for a gearbox

The gearbox code contains important data on the structure and function of the respective gearbox. Examples include the transmission ratio, the transmission type or the version. When looking for a vehicle gearbox as a replacement, the gearbox code ensures that the appropriate gearbox is purchased. At Autoparts24 you can enter the gearbox code directly into the search filter.

Find the right gearbox for your vehicle

A problem with the manual or automatic transmission often means that the car is no longer drivable. But a fault with the vehicle’s gearbox is still no cause for concern. At Autoparts24 you can find used gearboxes in good condition that have been removed by certified car recyclers. The various offers are clearly listed and can be compared at a glance. With a bit of luck, you can find a bargain or two.
