Tools for car repair: These 10 tools you should own

Car repairs require the right tools. Only then can car parts be replaced smoothly and maintenance work carried out reliably. Find out now which tools are needed for which car repairs and which practical helpers should not be missing in your hobby garage.

The most important tools for your hobby workshop

Anyone who wants to set up a hobby workshop for car repairs does not need too much equipment. However, all tools purchased should be of high quality in order to be able to carry out the work safely. You will find the most important tools in the following overview.

Tool assortment

A high-quality range of car tools includes all the tools needed in the hobby garage. This includes, for example, various pliers, screwdrivers or spanners that are specially designed for repair work on the car. Special hammers or files can also be included in the tool assortment.

Torque spanner

A torque spanner makes it possible to tighten screwed connections with the correct tightening torque. Especially in cars, there are numerous screws and bolted connections that must not be tightened too tightly, or only within a specified range. This prevents screws or bolts from being overstretched unintentionally. A good torque spanner can be adjusted sensitively for this purpose.

Oil filter spanner

When changing the engine oil, the oil filter should always be replaced with a new one. Otherwise, the filter can become clogged and the engine oil can no longer be filtered reliably. To be able to change the oil filter, most vehicles require a suitable oil filter spanner. With this tool, the oil filter can be gripped and easily replaced.

Workshop trolley

The workshop trolley is not a tool in the true sense of the word, but it is a practical way of storing tools. This is a mobile container on wheels that can be easily moved to any position around the car. In addition to all the necessary tools, dismantled car parts can also be stored neatly. This way, everything in the hobby garage is always well organised, which makes working easier.

Jack

A reliable jack is indispensable in every hobby garage. Not only when changing the wheels, but also for many other jobs, the jack is a useful helper. For example, the jack can provide good service when installing or removing components such as the gearbox. Hydraulic jacks are particularly practical, as they can be used effortlessly and universally for many vehicles. When selecting a suitable model, the maximum load capacity should be taken into account.

Support trestles

If you do not have a lifting platform or a repair pit, you will not be able to work under the car. This is the only way to carry out many repairs, from changing the oil to removing the exhaust. Even after lifting the vehicle with a jack, the jack stands provide additional safety. To ensure that the car can be jacked up without shaking, only appropriately stable jack stands should be purchased.

Socket spanner set

A socket set contains a ratchet and the matching sockets. With the help of this tool, many jobs on cars can be done much more easily, with less effort and in less time. Unlike a spanner, the ratchet does not have to be turned over and over again. Spark plugs can also be easily replaced with the right attachment.

Compressor

No hobby workshop should be without a high-quality compressor. Not only supplies the compressoer the air needed to inflate car tyres, but also enables the operation of numerous compressed air tools. Compressed air screwdrivers, sanders or even a spray gun for painting can be connected to it. In addition, the compressor allows dirt to be blown out and parts to be cleaned.

Impact wrench

Impact wrenches with rechargeable batteries facilitate wheel fitting, for example when changing from summer to winter tyres. But the wheels of the car also have to be removed to repair other components, such as the chassis or the brake system. The impact wrench is a great help here. With its help, even tight wheel nuts can be loosened without any problems. A square socket enables the use of various sockets.

Multimeter

A multimeter is a measuring device with which electrical voltages, currents and resistances can be reliably determined. It is indispensable for repair work on the car’s electrical system, for example, to determine or exclude the presence of voltage. The multimeter can also be used to test the cable connections. A digital multimeter with a large measuring range is recommended for universal use in the workshop.
