Honda gearboxes: Interesting facts about Honda vehicle gearboxes
The Japanese carmaker Honda offers its vehicles with manual or automatic transmissions, depending on the model. In the case of the latter, the manufacturer was quick to opt for continuously variable CVT transmissions, which are particularly popular in Japan and the USA. Although most Honda transmissions work without problems, certain types have already been affected by recalls. According to information from Honda, software errors and a problem with the auxiliary shaft of certain automatic transmissions were the cause of the recall.
Honda manual gearbox
In the past, manual gearboxes were part of Honda’s good products. Especially in Germany, a vehicle of the brand was often ordered with a manual gearbox. For a long time, Honda relied on manual transmissions with five gears; later, six-speed manual transmissions were used.
As of 2022, only the Honda Civic and the Honda Civic Type R will be offered on the European market with a manual transmission and six gears. The Honda Civic Type R performance model has a six-speed manual gearbox with automatic intermediate throttle function and enables particularly fast gear changes.
Honda automatic transmission
- Honda CVT: Automatic transmissions with the CVT designation are continuously variable transmissions that always operate in the optimal speed band. The results are low fuel consumption and optimised driving comfort, entirely without interruption of traction. Depending on the model, Honda’s automatic gearboxes have a gearshift simulation. In the Honda HR-V, for example, this simulates seven gears, so that the CVT transmission feels more like a normal automatic transmission to the driver. This type of automatic can be found in many Honda models such as the Honda Civic or in older Honda HR-Vs.
- Honda e-CVT: Drives with the designation e-CVT are installed by Honda in modern hybrid vehicles. Here they provide the appropriate connection between the combustion engine and the electric drive. Depending on the driving condition, the Honda is driven purely electrically or with the support of the petrol engine. The electric drive is part of the transmission, and recuperation is also realised via parts inside. The combustion engine charges the battery via a generator integrated in the transmission block; only above a certain driving speed is it coupled directly to the drive via a fixed transmission ratio. Technically, the e-CVT is not an automatic transmission in the true sense of the word, but Honda has nevertheless adopted the term CVT. The module is installed, for example, in the Honda CR-V, the Honda HR-V and the Honda Jazz.
- Honda i-Shift: Under the designation i-Shift, Honda installed automated transmissions whose shifting operations are carried out by a transmission control unit. The clutch is operated hydraulically and also controlled by a control unit. In addition to the automatic shift function, the i-Shift can also be set to a manual mode so that the driver can determine the gear himself. Honda i-Shift automatic transmissions were installed primarily in the Honda Jazz and Honda Civic models from 2005 onwards.
Transmission for Honda electric vehicles
With the Honda e model, the Japanese brand presented a purely electrically driven car for the first time in 2019. The electric drive of the Honda is combined with the transmission into one drive unit, which is located in the area of the rear axle. Honda uses a fixed gear ratio as the transmission. This ensures that the output speed of the installed electric motor is converted into a suitable speed to drive the vehicle.
Buy and install a used Honda gearbox
If a Honda gearbox is defective, it is worth replacing it with a used part in good condition and at a good price. To be able to buy the right Honda gearbox, you should have the gearbox code at hand. While the engine code is stamped directly on the block of the engine, the gearbox code is found on the clutch housing or the gearbox housing.
