Hyundai engines: These are the engines Hyundai uses in its cars
.
The South Korean Hyundai Motor Company is one of the world’s largest car manufacturers. The group offers various passenger cars and also minibuses with different drive concepts. In the beginning, the company, which was founded in 1967, used bought-in engines, but today all Hyundai engines are developed in-house.
Hyundai equips its vehicles with various petrol and diesel engines, which are considered robust and resilient. In order to reduce fuel consumption, various alternative drive systems such as hybrids have also been developed. Cars with electric drive are offered by Hyundai through the group’s own sub-brand Ioniq.
Different types of Hyundai car engines
Hyundai petrol engines
Three-cylinder in-line engines:
- Hyundai Epsilon 3-cylinder engine:Three-cylinder petrol engine with overhead camshaft, three valves per cylinder, cast iron engine block with light alloy cylinder head. This type of engine was used, for example, in the Hyundai Eon.
- Hyundai Kappa 3-cylinder engine: In-line three-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, with and without turbocharging. This engine series can be found in the Hyundai i30 and in some Hyundai i10, among others.
Four-cylinder in-line engines:
- Hyundai Epsilon 4-cylinder engine: Four-cylinder in-line petrol engine, overhead camshaft driven via timing belt, three valves per cylinder. These Hyundai engines can be found in various stages of construction in the Hyundai i10 or in the Hyundai Getz.
- Hyundai Kappa 4-cylinder engine: In-line 4-cylinder engine with aluminium engine block and cylinder head, twin overhead camshafts via timing chain, four valves per cylinder. This range of engines is fitted with and without turbo in models such as the i10, i20 and i30.
- Hyundai Alpha engine: Hyundai engine series with one or two overhead camshafts, cast iron engine block with light alloy cylinder head. First engine series developed in Korea for the Hyundai Getz or Hyundai Elantra models.
- Hyundai Gamma engine: In-line four-cylinder petrol engine with double overhead camshaft, engine block and cylinder head made of aluminium. Successor to the Alpha engine series, which is installed in the Hyundai Accent, the i20 model and the Hyundai i30.
- Hyundai Beta engine: Hyundai engines with four cylinders in line, which were intended to complement the larger displacement Alpha engine. Engine with cast iron block and light alloy cylinder head found with dual overhead camshafts in the Elantra or Hyundai Tucson.
.
- Hyundai Theta engine: Four-cylinder engines with aluminium engine block and cylinder head, dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Jointly developed engine by Daimler-Chrysler, Hyundai and Mitsubishi, which can be found in the Hyundai Santa Fe model, among others.
- Hyundai Ny engine: Hyundai engines as inline four-cylinder engines with overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Variable camshaft adjustment for intake and exhaust side, electronic accelerator. Found for example in the Hyundai Elantra or Hyundai i40.
Hyundai V6 engines:.
- Hyundai Delta engine: Six-cylinder petrol engines in V-construction, aluminium engine block and cylinder head. Four overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. First self-developed Hyundai V6 engine for vehicles such as Santa Fe or Tucson.
- Hyundai Lambda engine: Six-cylinder Hyundai engines with 60-degree V6 arrangement. Engine block as well as cylinder head made of aluminium, valve actuation via mechanical tappets, control by means of electronic accelerator pedal. To be found in the models Hyundai Genesis or Hyundai Santa Fe.
- Hyundai My engine: Six-cylinder engine for petrol, aluminium engine block and cylinder head, four overhead camshafts. Four valves per cylinder, controlled by mechanical tappets. This Hyundai engine series is found among others in the Hyundai Santa Fe.
Hyundai diesel engines
- Hyundai S engine: Diesel engines as 6-cylinder in V-arrangement, with cast iron engine block and light alloy cylinder head. These Hyundai engines were installed as passenger car V6 diesels for example in the Hyundai ix55.
- Hyundai U engine: Three-cylinder and four-cylinder in-line diesel engines with turbocharger and dual overhead camshafts. The engine series is installed, for example, in the Hyundai i40 or i30. The Hyundai Type U engines have common rail injection. With this type of direct injection, the fuel is delivered at high pressure directly to the injectors, which allows the injection timing and fuel quantity to be individually controlled.
