Mercedes Benz gearboxes: What you need to know about Mercedes gearboxes
The German car manufacturer Mercedes Benz traditionally installs manual and automatic transmissions in its vehicles. Depending on the vehicle, these are either in-house developments or purchased transmissions from different manufacturers. Mercedes Benz parts such as gearboxes are considered durable and robust, but wear, abrasion or dirt can lead to defects if the vehicle is run over a long distance or if it is not maintained properly.
Mercedes-Benz manual transmission
For decades, Mercedes Benz used various manual transmissions with four, five or even six gears in its cars. According to information from the manufacturer, the development and distribution of manual transmissions will no longer be offered with the next generation of vehicles.
As of 2022, only the A-Class, B-Class and CLA Shooting Brake passenger car series will still be available in Germany as 6-speed manual transmissions. In addition, various Mercedes Benz vans such as the Sprinter, the Vito and the Citan can still be ordered ex works with a manual transmission.
Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission
- Mercedes-Benz 7G-TRONIC automatic: The 7G-Tronic automatic transmission offers seven forward gears and has an electronic control system that can skip individual gears. The light-alloy housing has a favourable effect on the weight. The automatic transmission was installed in the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class, among others, from 2003 onwards.
- Mercedes Benz 9G-TRONIC automatic: The 9G-Tronic transmission from Mercedes Benz is an automatic that has nine forward gears. This type of automatic transmission works with the help of a torque converter. The automatic is installed in various models such as the E-Class, the S-Class or the Mercedes AMG SLC 43.
- Mercedes Benz 7G-DCT: The Mercedes Benz 7G-DCT transmissions work according to the dual clutch principle. The automatic transmission, also known as Dual Clutch Transmission, uses the technology of two separate transmissions, each with its own clutch, for this purpose. The low weight of the 7G-DCT automatic transmission allows it to be fitted in compact models such as the Mercedes Benz A-Class, the B-Class or the Mercedes Benz CLA.
- AMG Speedshift transmission: Special automatic transmissions are used for the performance series of the Mercedes Benz subsidiary AMG due to the higher engine outputs. For the automatic transmission known as Speedshift, the designers resorted to a wet starting clutch instead of the normally installed converter. This type of automatic transmission is used in various models such as the SLS Coupé or the S63.
Gearboxes for Mercedes Benz electric vehicles
In purely electric models, Mercedes Benz installs reduction gearboxes with one gear and a fixed transmission ratio, which are directly coupled to the drive units. This type of transmission reduces the high revs provided by the electric motor and allows for optimal electric drive performance.
What to bear in mind when replacing the Mercedes transmission
If the gearbox in the car is defective, it can be replaced with a used original part in good condition. When selecting a gearbox, make sure that it fits the Mercedes model exactly. The gearbox code on the gearbox often helps here. At Autoparts24 you can find used original car parts such as gearboxes from car recyclers at a favourable price. The matching car parts in good condition can be easily selected after entering the vehicle data.
