Nissan gearboxes: What you should know about Nissan gearboxes
The Japanese car manufacturer Nissan sells its vehicles worldwide with a whole range of different transmissions. Many of the transmissions are developed by the Japanese transmission manufacturer Jatco, which is a subsidiary of Nissan. In addition to the classic manual transmission, Nissan installs various automatic transmissions as CVT automatic, dual-clutch transmission or torque converter automatic. These transmissions are considered to be less prone to failure if the scheduled service intervals are observed.
Nissan manual gearbox
Depending on the model, Nissan offers manual transmissions in 5-speed or 6-speed versions. However, transmissions with a classic gear stick and pedal for the clutch are becoming increasingly rare, even with this manufacturer. Modern automatic transmissions promise a better development of the engine power and are easier to use in combination with hybrid drives. Nevertheless, Nissan continues to rely on the classic manual gearbox as part of its vehicle range.
Manual transmissions with 5 gears have a long tradition at Nissan. Models from the 1980s, such as the Nissan Sunny Traveller, were already equipped with the 5-speed manual box as standard. As of 2022, the Qashqai, Juke and Micra models are still offered with this type of transmission in Germany, as is the Nissan Transporter series. While the Nissan Qashqai and the Nissan Juke are each fitted with one type as a 6-speed variant, the Micra model is still available with a manual 5-speed transmission.
Nissan Automatic Transmission
- Nissan Xtronic CVT transmission: The term Xtronic is used by Nissan to describe automatic transmissions that are designed as continuously variable CVT transmissions. This type of transmission is extremely popular in Japan and the USA, and enables efficient operation and optimum engine performance. The decoupling of acceleration and engine speed associated with the continuously variable transmission takes some getting used to for many drivers, so the Nissan Qashqai model, for example, has simulated gear selection. The Xtronic CVT transmission is also available as an option in the Nissan Micra.
- Nissan DCT Dual Clutch Transmission: Nissan DCT transmissions are automatic transmissions designed as dual clutch transmissions. With this type of transmission, gear changes take place without interrupting traction. In addition, the DCT transmission enables better acceleration values with lower fuel consumption compared to other automatic transmissions. This is made possible by the special design of the gearbox with two internal clutches, one of which is responsible for each half of the gearbox. The DCT dual-clutch transmissions can be found, for example, in the Nissan X-Trail, the Nissan Juke and optionally in the Nissan Primastar van.
- Nissan torque converter automatic: Classic automatic transmissions with torque converters are also found in some Nissan models. This low-wear type of automatic works without traction interruption and offers a high level of driving comfort. Especially for cars with a lot of power and particularly stressed vehicle types, the torque converter automatic is the transmission type of choice for Nissan. For example, this type of automatic transmission can be found in the Nissan Navara, the Nissan Pathfinder or even the Nissan Murano Diesel. Many older Nissan vehicle models are also equipped with a torque converter automatic.
Gearboxes for Nissan electric vehicles
Nissan electric cars such as the Nissan Ariya, the Nissan Leaf or the Nissan e-NV200 have transmissions with only one gear and a fixed ratio. Here, the component has the task of matching the engine speed of the electric motor in a practical way. The Nissan Leaf has a gearbox flanged to the side of the drive that can be replaced.
Used gearboxes for your Nissan vehicle
Defective Nissan gearboxes and automatic gearboxes can be easily replaced with a suitable replacement gearbox at a reasonable price if required. When buying parts such as a used Nissan gearbox, make sure you select the correct variant. Precise information about the vehicle, such as the gearbox code found on the gearbox housing, often proves to be a great help when selecting the right car parts. At Autoparts24 you can buy Nissan car parts and used Nissan gearboxes that have been removed from car salvage yards in good condition and sometimes with only low mileage.
