Buying an automatic gearbox used – advice and good tips

Automatic transmissions make driving more comfortable, but they can also break down. Here you can find out which types there are and when you need a new automatic transmission. You also get important tips on buying used automatic transmissions.

Automatic transmission – What is it?

An automatic transmission ensures the transmission of power from the engine to the wheels of the vehicle. Speed and torque are adjusted by different gear ratios. Compared to the manual transmission, the gear change in the automatic transmission is fully automatic. A control unit determines which gear is engaged in the transmission.

The automatic transmissions used in the automotive sector differ in terms of transmission type. Converter automatic transmissions have a torque converter and integrated planetary gear sets. Dual-clutch transmissions have two partial transmissions, each with its own clutch. There are also continuously variable CVT transmissions in which the engine always runs in the optimum speed range.

In which cases do I need a new automatic transmission?

The automatic transmission is subject to constant wear with increasing mileage. Like other car parts, the automatic transmission can wear out or become damaged in some other way. Then the automatic transmission no longer shifts correctly or fails completely. It is often unavoidable to replace the gearbox with a spare part.

If the automatic transmission is damaged, the gears are no longer engaged correctly or the full number of gears is not available. Sometimes the vehicle will no longer move or there will be a lot of jerking when shifting gears.

Noises from the gearbox area in particular can indicate mechanical damage. However, the automatic transmission does not always have to be defective. Faults in the automatic transmission can also be triggered by a defective control unit.

Why should I buy a used automatic transmission?

Automatic transmissions can be repaired and parts replaced, but only at a high cost. Especially for vehicles with high mileage, these costs are not always worthwhile. It is then better and cheaper to buy a complete gearbox as a used part in good condition. In addition, buying used spare parts helps to conserve resources and protect the environment.

Select and order the right automatic transmission

Not every automatic transmission fits every vehicle or engine code. It is therefore important to select the right gearbox for the job. Suitable spare parts can be selected on the basis of information from the vehicle registration document. Data such as the gearbox code or the gearbox code letters also help with the selection.

Just as each type of engine has its own engine code, different types of automatic transmissions also have their own specific code. This transmission code can be found stamped directly on the transmission or in the vehicle documents. The exact location of the code may differ depending on the manufacturer.
