Buying a used manual gearbox – advice and good tips

Manual transmissions allow you to select gears manually while driving. Here you can find out how a manual gearbox works and when it needs to be replaced. Also, what you need to consider when choosing used gearboxes.

Manual transmission – What is it?

The gearbox is one of the most important components in the drive train of modern vehicles. There, the manual transmission is coupled to the engine via the clutch, and enables the adjustment of engine speed and torque. Depending on the gear ratio, it is possible to start the car without any problems, or to drive at high speed on the motorway.

The driver uses the gear stick to move a shift fork inside the manual transmission, which in turn moves a shift sleeve and thus connects the shift gears. The gear stick in the car is not always attached directly to the manual gearbox. The connection to the gearbox is often realised via a shift linkage or via cables as a cable shift.

Under what circumstances do I need a new manual gearbox?

Car parts such as the gearbox are subject to constant stress. With high mileage, the wear of components such as the gearshift wheels and the gearshift sleeve progresses. Driving behaviour can also be responsible for gearbox damage. If the gearbox can no longer be shifted as usual, replacement is often unavoidable.

A defect in the manual gearbox often manifests itself through symptoms such as problems when engaging the gear. It is often no longer possible to select a gear, or the engaged gear suddenly jumps out. It may also take a lot of effort to engage gears when the gearbox is defective.

If a manual gearbox is defective, signs such as unusual noises in neutral or while driving will sometimes appear. In addition, cracking noises may occur when selecting gears. Furthermore, defective manual transmissions sometimes tend to vibrate.

Why should I buy a used manual gearbox?

Buying used manual transmissions offers many advantages. For example, the price of a used gearbox is usually much cheaper than the cost of new car parts. Also for a repair of the gearbox with installation of new parts, much higher prices are called.

Especially in the case of an older vehicle with a high mileage, the installation of used car parts such as a manual gearbox is worthwhile. In addition, the reuse of intact car parts conserves resources, thus contributing to environmental protection.

Select and order the right manual gearbox

Not every type of manual gearbox fits every vehicle and every engine. It is therefore important to select spare parts such as the gearbox correctly. Data from the vehicle documents as well as the information on the gearbox help in the selection of a suitable gearbox.
