Saab engines: What you should know about Saab engines
Saab Automobile was once one of the most famous car manufacturers in the world. The cars from Sweden were considered both robust and innovative and were often used in rallying. Originally, Saab was an aircraft manufacturer, but in 1947 it introduced the first car they developed themselves. From 1989 onwards, Saab cooperated with the GM group and was taken over completely by the latter in 2000.
After a sale to the sports car manufacturer Spyker, Saab was dissolved in 2012. As Saab has not been active as a manufacturer for years, it is almost impossible to find new original Saab engines. Used Saab engines, on the other hand, are still available in sufficient numbers, as are other used original spare parts. For Saab enthusiasts, it may well be worthwhile to buy a suitable part at a good price and put it in stock.
Saab engines – these engine types are available
In its more than fifty-year history, Saab has not only produced one or two cars, but has also developed its own engines. From the late 1960s onwards, Saab relied on the Slant-Four engine from Triumph, but from the 1970s onwards it also developed its own engines derived from the Triumph engine.
Saab developed and used petrol engines with turbo long before they became popular. In this way, the Swedes were able to extract considerable power from relatively little displacement. Saab, on the other hand, was relatively late in the development of diesel engines. A Saab diesel vehicle is therefore usually equipped with an engine from Opel.
Saab Petrol Engines
- Saab B engines: The Saab B engine is a type of engine for petrol that has four cylinders in line. While the engine block was made of grey cast iron, parts such as the cylinder head are made of aluminium. Later, a cylinder head with two overhead camshafts and 16 valves was developed for this type of engine, which was used in the Saab Rally car, among others. From 1978, the Saab B engine was also fitted with a turbocharger in the Saab 99 and early Saab 900.
- Saab H engines: This Saab engine is a further development, which partly evolved from the Saab B engine. These Saab engines are also designed as four-cylinder in-line engines with a grey cast iron engine block and aluminium cylinder head. Compared to the B engines, this type of engine has a higher compression, which is indicated by the letter H. Saab H engines were used in models such as the Saab 900, the Saab 9000 and the Saab 9-5.
Saab Diesel Engines
- Saab TiD engines: Saab engines with the designation TiD are diesel engines with direct injection. This type of engine was offered by Saab in different variants with different displacement and engine power, depending on the vehicle. The designation TiD stands for Turbo Injected Diesel. These engines were built between 1998 and 2012 and can be found, for example, in the Saab 9-3 II or in a vehicle such as the Saab 9-5.
