SEAT engines: All information about SEAT engines
SEAT is the best-known Spanish car manufacturer and today belongs to the Volkswagen Group together with Skoda and Audi. The production and development of engines is jointly driven by the manufacturers. This means that a certain type of engine is often found in models made by SEAT, Volkswagen or Audi.
SEAT engines overview
SEAT installs various engines in its vehicles that use petrol, diesel or natural gas as fuel. The engine code follows the pattern used by other models within the Volkswagen Group.
Some SEAT engines also share the same problems with other engines from the VW Group. For example, some TSI engines may have increased oil consumption. Problems with elongated timing chains can also occur with the SEAT TSI engine.
SEAT petrol engine
- SEAT TSI Engine: SEAT engines with the abbreviation TSI are turbocharged petrol engines with direct injection. The designation TSI stands for Turbocharged Stratified Injection or Twincharged Stratified Injection. Depending on the variant, the engines have a combination of mechanical charger and turbocharger. The TSI is installed in many models such as the Arona or the Leon.
- SEAT EcoTSI engine: SEAT markets engines that are designed to be particularly efficient and fuel-saving under the EcoTSI designation. These are turbocharged petrol engines with direct injection that are characterised by high torque at low engine speeds. This engine with start-stop system is installed in cars such as the SEAT Ibiza or the Ateca.
- SEAT MPI engine: If SEAT engines bear the abbreviation MPI, they are engines for petrol that are designed as a purely naturally aspirated engine without a turbocharger. The MPI engine has multi-point injection, whereby the designation MPI stands for Multi Point Injection. The simply designed MPI engines are used by SEAT in the Ibiza small car series.
SEAT Diesel Engine
- SEAT TDI engine: Modern SEAT engines for diesel bear the designation TDI. The abbreviation stands for Turbocharged Direct Injection. The engines developed by the VW Group have direct injection and turbocharging. The diesels are installed in the SEAT models Tarraco, Ateca and Leon and are fuel-efficient and powerful.
SEAT hybrid drives and natural gas engines
- SEAT eTSI engine: SEAT engines with the abbreviation eTSI are hybrid drives designed as mild hybrids. A TSI turbo petrol engine with three or four cylinders is supported by a small 48 volt electric motor, which saves fuel. The associated battery is charged by recuperation. The SEAT eTSI drive is installed in the Leon and Leon Sportstourer models.
- SEAT TGI engine: With the TGI engine, SEAT offers engines that can run on gas. Unlike other manufacturers who rely on liquid gas, SEAT installs engines for natural gas CNG. The abbreviation TGI stands for Turbo Gas Injection. The natural gas engine, which can also run on petrol, is available for the SEAT Arona, SEAT Ibiza and SEAT Leon models.
- SEAT e-HYBRID engine: At SEAT, the designation e-HYBRID identifies vehicles that are designed as plug-in hybrids. The e-HYBRID drive installed in these models combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. The car can be charged externally if possible. The e-HYBRID drives can be found in the SEAT Tarraco or also in the SEAT Leon Cupra e-Hybrid model.
