Turbocharger: function, defects and replacement of the turbo in the vehicle
A turbocharger helps the car’s combustion engine to produce more power. For this purpose, exhaust gas turbochargers compress the intake air and feed it into the engine. Today, more and more diesel engines, but also petrol engines, are equipped with a turbocharger. Due to various causes, damage to the exhaust gas turbocharger can easily occur, especially with high mileage. It is not always worthwhile to repair a defective turbocharger. In this case, a used turbocharger can be purchased for many engines at a favourable price.
What is a turbocharger?
A turbocharger compresses the combustion air supplied to the engine. Compressing the air improves the filling of the cylinders and also increases the power of the engine. The turbocharger uses the exhaust gases emitted by the engine to drive a turbine wheel. For this reason, the turbocharger is also called an exhaust gas turbocharger or ATL for short.
As an auxiliary unit on the engine, the turbocharger is constructed in two parts. On one side is the turbine, which is driven by the exhaust gas flow of the engine. On the other side of the turbocharger is a compressor. Both components are firmly connected via a turbocharger shaft. If the turbine moves, this drive is passed on to the compressor.
How the turbocharger works in the vehicle
In order to be able to use the exhaust energy of the engine, the turbines of turbochargers are connected to the exhaust outlet of the engine. The exhaust gases flow through the turbine and drive the turbine wheel. The turbine outlet is in turn connected to the exhaust system of the respective vehicle so that the exhaust gases can finally escape via the exhaust.
The compressor connected to the turbine, on the other hand, draws in its air via the vehicle’s air filter. This air is compressed and supplied to the engine’s intake tract as combustion air. Thanks to this technique, more air is pumped into the cylinders, and cylinder filling is improved. Engine power and torque also increase in the lower speed range.
The turbo offers many advantages
Turbo engines use the exhaust gas energy that would otherwise be lost to a large extent uselessly. Compared to the naturally aspirated engine, the cylinders in the turbo do not have to draw in the combustion air themselves through their downward movement. Especially at high engine speeds, problems can otherwise occur due to the short opening times of the intake valves, which the turbo compensates for.
Today, turbochargers are almost standard in diesel engines. Exhaust gas turbocharging is also popular in downsizing to achieve high engine performance with small displacement and low consumption. Compared to naturally aspirated engines with the same displacement, engines with turbochargers often offer higher torque and better performance. The use of the turbocharger also reduces pollutant emissions.
5 common causes for defective turbochargers
- Wear of compressor or turbine wheel at high mileage
- Damage due to penetrating dirt or foreign bodies
- Engine was not warmed up sufficiently
- Engine oil of poor quality or the wrong oil was filled in
- Oil change was not carried out
If the turbocharger in the vehicle is defective
Turbochargers reach high speeds during operation and are also thermally stressed by the hot exhaust gases. When the car engine is running, the turbocharger is also in motion. For this reason, exhaust gas turbochargers can break down due to wear, especially at higher mileages. However, other causes are also possible if the turbocharger is defective.
Modern turbochargers are connected to the oil circuit of the engine to achieve perfect lubrication of the turbo. A lack of oil supply can easily damage the turbo and cause it to fail. However, not all defects in the turbocharger are immediately noticed by the user of the car. Often, the damage is already more advanced when clear signs point to the broken turbocharger.
Typical symptoms of a defective turbo
- Turbocharger causes rattling or whistling noises
- Oil visibly leaking from the turbocharger
- Engine shows clear loss of power
- Boost pressure display delivers unusual values
- Smoke development from the exhaust
- Oil consumption is unusually high
How to change the turbocharger
If the car’s turbocharger is damaged, it is usually a good idea to replace the entire component. The cost and procedure for changing the turbocharger depend on the model. Experienced mechanics with a well-equipped hobby workshop can sometimes change the turbocharger themselves.
While on some vehicle models the turbocharger can be replaced from above via the engine compartment, on other models the ATL can only be replaced from below. In this case, depending on the vehicle, the drive shafts or a cross member may have to be dismantled in order to access the turbo.
Replacing a defective turbocharger with a suitable spare part
To change the turbocharger, the defective turbocharger must be dismantled. The oil circuit, exhaust system and combustion air supply must be dismantled in any case. The new turbocharger is installed in reverse order. Professionals use new screws and replace all seals when installing the turbocharger. The engine oil is also replaced with new oil.
New or used turbochargers are not always equipped with the corresponding attachments. However, parts such as the mounting frame or the oil supply and oil drain lines can often be taken over from the old turbocharger. When assembling the turbocharger, make sure that no small parts or dirt can enter the turbo.
The prices for changing the turbocharger in a specialist workshop can vary depending on the vehicle model, brand and type of combustion engine. In addition to the price for the spare parts, the mechanic’s performance must also be remunerated accordingly. In addition to variable costs in the hourly rate, workshops sometimes also offer a favourable fixed price.
Buy the right turbocharger used
Turbochargers for diesel and petrol engines can often be bought cheaply second-hand. This is not only easy on the wallet, but also less harmful to the environment. Used spare parts such as turbochargers often come from environmentally friendly car recycling. In this process, the still intact parts of cars are dismantled, inspected and then offered for sale.
At Autoparts24.eu you will find a large selection of car parts for many vehicle models. If you want to buy a turbocharger, it is important to select the exact turbo for the respective model. For OEM parts, you can simply compare the original number. Matching turbochargers for petrol or diesel engines can be found together with the corresponding prices using the convenient search function.

The used turbo charger makes it possible for the motor to take in much more air when operating with the actual combustion, than the quantity of air the motor is able to absorb. Your next preowned turbo charger operates like this: 1. Air is sucked in directly in the compressor house through the air filter of the motor and from there on the air is compressed. 2. The compressed air is administered hard and directly towards the combustion chamber of the car motor. 3. If your car is equipped with an Intercooler it will try to provide cooler air in this part of the operation of the turbo charger. 4. Now a process is initiated for suction of the air directly into the combustion chamber of your motor. 5. From here an amount of exhaust gas is quickly and directly pressed into your turbine and thus creating a rotation in the turbo. 6. The last part of the turbo chargers work is that the gas from your exhaust is let out through the exhaust pipe. |
