Volvo engines: What you should know about Volvo engines
Volvo is the best-known Swedish automobile company. The company, headquartered in Gothenburg, was founded in 1927, later belonged to Ford and since 2010 to the Chinese car company Geely. Many of Volvo’s engines are proprietary developments that are considered extremely robust. There is often a problem with Volvo engines only at high mileage. .
Volvo engines are not only found in the Volvo. Many Volvo engines from the common time with Ford were installed in Ford models and vice versa. A Volvo engine can also be found in a Renault vehicle. Volvo has also developed engines together with Yamaha Motor Corporation. Until 2000, Volvo also bought diesel engines from Volkswagen.

Volvo has always designed robust power units as petrol or diesel. While engine data such as displacement or number of cylinders used to be read off the five-digit engine code, Volvo has been using a two-digit engine code depending on engine power since 2010.
Volvo engines for petrol
- Volvo Engine Architecture engines (VEA): Modern petrol engines have been developed by Volvo together with the Chinese manufacturer Geely since 2013. Three-cylinder in-line engines are marketed under the term GEP3 for Global Engine Petrol 3. The four-cylinder engines are called VEP4 for Volvo Engine Petrol 4. All variants are made entirely of aluminium with DOHC valve timing. The series of modern engines for petrol are installed in different Volvo cars such as the Volvo V40, the V60 estate or the Volvo S60, as well as in the model series XC40, XC60 and XC90, S90 and V90.
- Volvo Modular Engine: As Volvo Modular Engine, various Volvo engines were produced as four-cylinder, five-cylinder and six-cylinder. All engines have an aluminium engine block and cylinder heads made of aluminium. The valve train is designed as a DOHC with two overhead camshafts. For example, one engine from the Volvo Modular Engine range is the Volvo B4204S engine. This engine with 1,948 cubic centimetres displacement and four cylinders in line can be found for example in the Volvo S40, but also in Renault.
- Volvo V8 engine: From 2005, Volvo installed large V8 turbo engines in various models. The Volvo engine with the engine code B8444S was created in cooperation with Yamaha in Japan. These are engines with eight cylinders in V-arrangement, which have an aluminium engine block. Each engine is equipped with two overhead camshafts per head and four valves per cylinder. The V8 Volvo engines were built with 4.4 litres displacement in the Volvo XC90 and Volvo S80.
- Volvo inline six-cylinder engine: Volvo engines with six cylinders in line can be found in various Volvos and Land Rovers in the form of the SI6 engine series. The turbocharged aluminium engines have four valves per cylinder. All SI6 six-cylinder engines have a displacement between 3.0 and 3.2 litres. They have been fitted in Volvo models such as the V60 estate, the V70 estate and the Volvo S80, as well as in the XC60, XC70 and the Land Rover Freelander.

- Engine Architecture Diesel: Volvo has been designing advanced diesel engines together with Chinese partner Geely since 2013. The modern four-cylinder in-line engines are called VED4, which stands for Volvo Engine Diesel 4. According to information from Volvo, this is the last engine series of the group with diesel as fuel. These Volvo engines are installed in the Volvo S60, V40, V60 estate, XC60, S80, V70 estate as well as in the XC60, XC70 and XC90.
- Volvo D engine: Volvo engines designated D5 are in-line five-cylinder diesels with a design based on the Volvo Modular Engine for petrol. The D5 diesel engine was introduced by Volvo in 2002. Later variants with smaller displacement are designated Volvo D3 and Volvo D4. Volvo’s aluminium engines have a DOHC valve train with four valves per cylinder. The engine type was installed, for example, in the V60 and the XC60.
