The term “steering” covers the whole system that provides the car’s driving ability. From the steering column, which is the mechanical-hydraulic cylinder unit, which runs from the steering wheel down to the steering gear, to the swing arms, which direct the wheels to the right or left.

In this article, we therefore start from the steering column, because the steering unit in total is made up of so many different car parts that a single article would not describe it all.

The lifetime of a steering varies

The steering column, i.e. the cylinder itself, which lies between the steering wheel and the steering gear, usually has a longer lifetime than the car itself, and this is also the case for robust parts such as the suspension itself.

However, the hydraulic components, which are also part of the steering column, may however become dysfunctional if the car is regularly driven in rough terrain or if maintenance of the vehicle has been insufficient.

The right steering

Since the steering is associated with the entire steering mechanism, you may soon encounter terms such as caster, camber, toe-in, toe-out or KPI.

These terms describe different angles and distances, related to the placement and inclination of the car’s wheels, and are only relevant in connection with setting and adjustment.

Fortunately, you do not need to have complete knowledge of the mechanical terms in order to find the right spare part.

Tire wear

The steering gear is not just for turning right or left. In modern cars, the steering system is finely tuned so that the tire’s contact with the road is optimal in terms of drag and reduction of tire-road contact.

It may sound as a paradox that the tires should have as little contact with the road as possible, but this is to make the driving easier (because more contact requires more power when turning).

If the fine tuning is not working, it means that the tires wear unevenly and disproportionately.

What is a steering wheel? And how does it work?

The steering is the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering gear, which is further connected with swing arms, which direct the position of the wheels and the direction of the car.

It ensures that the car steer according to the steering wheel and your movements and is consequently an important spare part to maintain best possible.

Although steering wheel / wheel connection sounds like simple mechanic, it is an extremely important component of your vehicle because the mechanics of wheel rotation and inclination (through the steering gear) are more complicated than it sounds.

The steering wheel of modern cars collapses in the event of a collision as a safety measure, so that the driver of the car is less damaged in the event of accidents. Therefore, in many ways it is a major safety concern that your steering is in order.

When to change the steering gear?

The following symptoms that require steering replacement may also mean that you need to change or refill your power steering oil. In your user manual for your vehicle, it says where to find the oil chamber.

It is recommended that you change your power steering oil at least every three or four years.

You should take a closer look at your steering gear if:

– the steering wheel is heavier to turn than usual

– the power steering oil is leaking. Typically, there is a smell of burned oil. In addition, the oil is typically reddish or pink, dripping from the rear of the engine.

– you hear scratching sounds as you navigate with the steering wheel

– the steering wheel does not automatically return to the center i.e. wheel direction straight out

– your steering wheel does not attach itself after you adjust it

There are both safety and financial issues to consider when it comes to steering replacement.

It helps to ensure the car’s mobility, minimizes tire wear and maximizes energy efficiency, and with the correct refurbishment, you avoid major damage to your vehicle.

 

How much does a new steering wheel cost?

At Autoparts24, the steering itself, which connects the steering wheel and steering gear, and which includes the power steering, usually costs approx. 95 to 120 EUR. As stated earlier in the article, the prices of the steering wheel vary depending on which part you need to replace.

Which tools to use for steering change?

As mentioned, replacing the steering wheel is associated with a fine tuning that most people cannot do properly at home in their own garage.

If it’s just the steering column you need to replace, use a wrench set, a universal joint and suitable tool to remove the panels that cover the steering wheel and driver’s seat mechanism.
