Audi gearboxes: What you need to know about Audi gearboxes
The German premium manufacturer Audi installs different automatic and manual gearboxes in its vehicles. The automatic variants are used in different versions as Audi S tronic, tiptronic or multitronic. Audi transmissions are considered to be reliable, but problems such as oil loss, starting jerks or poor power transmission can also occur.
Audi manual gearbox
Manual transmissions are still popular with Audi customers. This type of transmission is mainly fitted in smaller Audi vehicles and models with weaker engines. Most Audi manual transmissions are equipped with six gears, but a few variants also have five gears.
Audi can look back on decades of development work for its manual transmissions and uses state-of-the-art technologies. Audi’s manual transmissions, for example, have a high degree of efficiency with low internal friction and special bearings for the shift forks. Manual transmissions are installed, for example, in Audi models such as the Q2, A3 Sedan, A4 Avant or Q2 Sportback.
Audi automatic transmission
- Audi S tronic automatic: Audi transmissions with the designation S tronic are automatic transmissions that are designed as dual-clutch transmissions like a DSG. This type of Audi automatic uses two clutches, each responsible for a sub-gear. The S tronic transmissions combine the advantages of automatic and manual transmission. They are installed with six or seven gears in many Audi models such as the Audi A1, the A3, the RS3 Sportback or even the SQ2.
- Audi multitronic transmission: Audi developed and marketed continuously variable automatic transmissions under the name multitronic. These transmissions enable the engine to operate at optimum efficiency at all times. For this purpose, they have a variator with a link chain running in an oil bath. In addition, the multitronic has a hydraulic and electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that decouples the transmission from the engine when the vehicle is stationary. This reduces fuel consumption and enables dynamic starting behaviour. This type of transmission can be found, for example, in the Audi A6 C7 or also in the A4 B8.
- Audi tiptronic transmission: The transmissions with the designation tiptronic are classic automatic transmissions as torque converter automatics. This type of Audi transmission offers a high level of starting comfort and shift performance. In addition, the tiptronic automatic works particularly efficiently, which is achieved, among other things, by a torque converter lock-up with integrated damper. The 8-speed version is installed in the Audi RS 5, RS 6 and RS Q8 models, among others.
Transmissions for Audi electric vehicles
In electrically powered vehicles, Audi mainly uses compact 1-speed gearboxes as part of the drive unit. Here, the fixed-ratio transmissions in the electric car ensure that the engine speed and the speed of the drive wheels are perfectly matched.
Buy and install Audi gearboxes by vehicle category
If there is a problem with the Audi gearbox, it is not always worthwhile to have the gearbox repaired or overhauled due to the costs involved. Often, the installation of a replacement gearbox at a favourable price is the best option instead. In order to be able to buy a suitable original Audi gearbox, information such as the gearbox code or the exact designation should be available. Suitable spare parts such as gearboxes for replacement and many other car parts can be found at Autoparts24.
