Honda car engines: What you need to know about Honda engines
.
Honda Motor Company Ltd. is one of the largest independent vehicle manufacturers in Japan. While the company started its road to success by manufacturing motorbikes, today Honda is best known for its modern cars. The first car was developed at Honda as early as the 1960s.
Honda placed value on advanced drive concepts early on. The Honda engines are considered robust, engine damage usually only occurs at high mileages. In addition to economical petrol engines, the Japanese engineers are focusing on environmentally friendly drive technologies such as hybrid or electric drives. According to information from the group, Honda wants to offer an electrically powered car in every vehicle class by 2025.
Different types of Honda engines
Honda petrol engines
- Honda P Engine: Engines with three cylinders in line, fitted mainly in small models such as the manufacturer’s Kei Cars. However, when fitted with a turbo, the Honda three-cylinder is also used in larger models such as the Civic.
- Honda B engine: Honda uses the designation B engine for various in-line four-cylinder engines with different displacements. These Honda engines with two overhead camshafts and partly variable valve timing are found in compact vehicles such as the Civic or the CR V.
- Honda D engine: Honda D engines refer to a range of Honda engines with four cylinders in-line. The petrol engines work with one or two camshafts, and some with variable valve lift adjustment. The D engines were installed in models such as the Civic or the CR X.
- Honda L Engine: Honda engines with the L designation were introduced with the Honda Jazz and feature four cylinders inline. Depending on the version of the L engine, technologies such as dual ignition or variable valve timing are used. In addition to the Honda Jazz, these engines can also be found, for example, in the Honda Civic or the Honda Accord.
- Honda R engine: Engines with the R designation were introduced at Honda with the eighth model generation of the Civic. The goal in the development was powerful engines that also save fuel. The in-line petrol engines with four cylinders and 16 valves are equipped with variable valve train i-VTEC. These Honda power units can be found, for example, in the Honda Jazz, Civic, CR V or HR V.
- Honda K engine: Honda K engine series engines feature dual overhead camshafts and operate with roller rocker arms. The engines are equipped with single ignition coils and distributorless ignition systems. Depending on the version, only the intake valves or also the exhaust side can be variably controlled. Honda K- engines are found in models such as the Honda Accord, the Honda CR V or the Honda Civic.
Honda diesel engines and electric drives
- Honda N engine: With the N series, Honda presented car engines for diesel for the first time. The Honda diesel engines use common rail injection and have an aluminium engine block. The two overhead camshafts are driven by roller chain. In addition, turbochargers with variable adjustment are used. This type of engine was used in the Honda Accord, the Civic and in the Honda FR V and Jazz models
.
- Honda e engine: The electric motor is found in the all-electric Honda e small car and is installed in two power levels. They are permanent magnet excited synchronous machines that produce 136 hp in the Honda e and 154 hp in the Honda e Advance. The electric motors are housed in the rear and drive the rear axle in each case.
10 modern Honda drive concepts
- 1.0 VTEC Turbo: Economical 1.0-litre inline P engine with three-cylinder technology and turbocharging from the Honda Civic with 126 hp. Dual overhead camshafts, VTEC variable valve timing, 12 valves, engine block and light alloy cylinder head.
.
- 1.5 VTEC Turbo: In-line four-cylinder engine with turbocharger, light alloy engine block and light alloy cylinder head. Honda L engine as a 16-valve with two overhead camshafts and variable valve timing VTEC, which produces 182 hp in the Honda Civic.
- 2.0 i-VTEC: High-displacement petrol engine in the Honda Civic with 158 hp from 2.0 litres. Honda K engine with aluminium engine block and cylinder head, two overhead camshafts, variable valve adjustment, as a naturally aspirated engine without turbo with four cylinders in series.
- 1.5 i-MMD: Hybrid system with 109 hp and 253 Nm torque for the Honda Jazz. Combination of 1.5 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine and electric drive with two e-motors.
- 1.3 i-VTEC: Petrol engine with four cylinders in line and 1.3 litre displacement in the Honda Jazz. Honda engine with intake manifold injection and 98 hp output with 118 Nm torque.
- 2.0 i-MMD 2WD: Modern hybrid with 184 hp and 315 Nm torque. The hybrid system with 2.0 litre i-VTEC petrol engine and electric drive motor is offered in the Honda CR V with front-wheel drive.
- 2.0 i-MMD AWD: All-wheel drive concept as a hybrid system for the Honda CR V. Combination of electric drive and i-VTEC petrol engine with 2.0 litre displacement and 184 hp 315 Nm torque.
- 1.5 i-MMD: HR V Hybrid with twin-motor e-motor system and 1.5 litre in-line four-cylinder petrol engine. Modern drive concept with 131 hp and 235 Nm torque.
- 100 kW e motor: Electric motor for the Honda e with 100 kW or 136 hp output. Permanent magnet excited synchronous machine with maximum 315 Nm torque.
- 113 kW e motor: Permanently excited synchronous motor for the Honda e Advance. Electric motor output of 113 kW or 154 hp with a maximum torque of 315 Nm.
Find used Honda motors
After an engine failure, it is often a good idea to buy a used Honda engine. This way, a defective vehicle of an older model year can usually be repaired without any problems. Used Honda engines are also often cheaper than extensive engine repairs.
At Autoparts24.eu you will find a wide range of car parts, such as used Honda engines. If you want to buy a used Honda engine, you can now easily find suitable units for your car thanks to the practical search function. All you have to do is enter the vehicle make and model designation.
