Skoda gearboxes: What you need to know about Skoda gearboxes
The Czech car manufacturer Skoda equips its models with different variants of manual and automatic transmissions. For almost every model, there is a choice of different transmission types, most of which are linked to a specific option in terms of engine and equipment. As Skoda has been part of the German Volkswagen Group since 2000, it is hardly surprising that the manufacturer mainly uses gearboxes from the VW range. This is also an advantage when spare parts such as a replacement gearbox are needed.
Skoda manual gearbox
Contrary to the trend, manual transmissions are still available for almost all Skoda models. In this way, customers can choose for themselves whether they need an automatic transmission or prefer to engage the gear in their Skoda manually. The manual transmissions installed by Skoda are divided into 5-speed and 6-speed versions.
Which gearbox is installed usually depends on the engine capacity and power of the selected engine. As of 2022, the vehicle models Skoda Scala, Skoda Superb, Skoda Kodiaq, Skoda Karoq, Skoda Kamiq and the Skoda Octavia are available with a 6-speed transmission. The 5-speed manual transmission variant is offered in the Skoda Fabia, Skoda Kamiq and Skoda Scala models.
Skoda automatic transmission
- Skoda 7-speed DSG: Skoda DSG gearboxes are automatic gearboxes that are designed as dual-clutch gearboxes. Technically, they are two individual gearboxes in a common housing. One half of the gearbox is responsible for the even gears, the other for the odd gears. Both gearbox halves have their own clutch. When changing gears, the gear required in each case is already engaged in the transmission, so that only one clutch needs to be opened and the second closed. This allows for quick gear changes when accelerating, coupled with good fuel efficiency. The 7-speed DSG automatic transmissions are installed in the Skoda Kamiq, Skoda Karoq, Skoda Kodiaq, Skoda Superb and Skoda Octavia.
- Skoda 6-speed DSG: The predecessor of the 7-speed DSG was the 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. It works technically like the 7-speed version, but has one gear less. This type of automatic gearbox is mainly found in older Skoda vehicles, such as the Skoda Yeti model.
- Skoda 7-speed DSG 4×4: Skoda vehicles with all-wheel drive are equipped with a 7-speed DSG 4×4 transmission. This is a Skoda automatic gearbox which, in terms of technical design, is almost identical to the 7-speed DSG gearbox for front-wheel drive vehicles. However, the 7-speed DSG 4×4 transmission has an additional output to which the cardan shaft to the rear axle is connected. This also transmits the drive power to the rear, so that the car can be driven via all four wheels. A multi-plate clutch automatically engages the rear drive whenever the front wheels threaten to spin. The DSG 4×4 7-speed gearbox is fitted in the Skoda Superb as well as optionally in the Skoda Kodiaq, the Skoda Karoq or the Skoda Octavia.
Gearboxes for Skoda electric vehicles
With the Skoda Enyaq model, the Czech manufacturer is also represented in the electric sector. The all-electric Skoda has a two-stage 1-speed gearbox, which helps to reduce the high output speed of the electric motor accordingly.
