Nissan engines: What you should know about Nissan engines
Alongside Toyota and Mazda, Nissan is one of the best-known Japanese car manufacturers and stands in direct comparison with them. The company, based in Yokohama, has been in existence since 1933 and develops its engines both on its own and together with other brands.
Nissan is part of an alliance of carmakers that also includes Mitsubishi, Renault and Dacia. The merger of the brands enables the development of common models and engines, and allows common vehicle platforms.
Nissan Engines Overview
Nissan engines are available as petrol and diesel, and as electric motors for Nissan’s all-electric models. The manufacturer regularly develops its engines to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, and to increase performance.
Nissan engine for petrol
- Nissan KR Engine: Nissan engines with the abbreviation KR are modern petrol engines with turbocharging, which are installed as three-cylinder and four-cylinder engines. This type of Nissan engine has variable valve timing and variable compression. The engine block and cylinder head are made of aluminium, and there are four valves and two camshafts per cylinder. The three-cylinder KR variant was first offered in the fourth generation X-Trail.
- Nissan HR engine: Engines with the engine code HR were developed by Nissan together with Renault and Mercedes-Benz. They are in-line engines with three or four cylinders, produced in different versions and with different displacement sizes. The engine block and cylinder head are made of aluminium, and the cylinders each have four valves. A hybrid version of the HR engine is used by Nissan in the Juke Hybrid model.
- Nissan VQ Engine: Nissan VQ engines are V6 petrol engines. This type of Nissan engine has two banks of cylinders in a 60 degree V arrangement. The engine block of the VQ engines is made of aluminium, as are the cylinder heads. The cylinders are each fitted with four valves controlled by double camshafts. The Nissan VQ engine is installed with different displacements in the Nissan Frontier and Nissan Pathfinder models.
Nissan Diesel Engines
- Nissan YD Engine: Nissan engines with the engine code YD are diesel engines with four cylinders in line, which exist in different displacement sizes. The engines with a displacement between 2.2 and 2.5 litres have a cast iron engine block and an aluminium cylinder head. The valves are controlled by two overhead camshafts via timing chain. The YD engines can be found in the Nissan Navara and Pathfinder models, among others.
- Nissan M9R engine: Nissan turbocharged diesels, developed in conjunction with Renault, are marketed under the M9R designation. The four-cylinder in-line engines are constructed with a cast iron engine block and an aluminium cylinder head. The cylinders each have four valves, which are controlled by two overhead camshafts. M9R engines are found in the Nissan X-Trail and Qashqai.
Nissan Electric Engines
- Nissan EM Motors: Nissan electric vehicles are equipped with Nissan electric motors, which carry the EM designation. These include the Nissan motor EM61, which is found in the first generation of the Nissan Leaf. Since the second generation of the Leaf and in the Nissan E-NV200 electric van, on the other hand, the Nissan motor type EM57 can be found as an AC synchronous motor. These Nissan electric motors have liquid cooling.

Buy used Nissan engines
If the engine in the car is defective, it is not always worth repairing the unit due to the high costs depending on the year of manufacture. Often, a Nissan replacement engine is available at a favourable price. Used replacement engines are removed from the car in the course of environmentally friendly car recycling and offered for sale on the market.
