VW gearboxes: What you should know about VW gearboxes

The German car manufacturer Volkswagen offers its vehicles with both manual and automatic transmissions. Both in-house developments and gearboxes from various suppliers are used. Identical transmissions can also be found in models from VW’s sister companies Audi, Seat and Skoda. VW transmissions are considered durable, but drivers of vehicles with dual-clutch transmissions sometimes complain about problems such as delays when shifting gears, jerky starts or noises from the transmission area.

VW manual gearbox

Depending on the vehicle model, Volkswagen installs manual gearboxes with five or six gears. The five-speed manual gearbox is found, for example, in the VW Up! , the Polo or the T-Cross, as well as in the VW Taigo, depending on the engine. Six-speed manual gearboxes are installed, for example, in the VW Golf and the Tiguan, but also in the Touran, T-Roc or Passat models. In 2019, VW developed a new manual transmission, the MQ281, which is intended to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions of pollutants.

At the end of 2021, Volkswagen announced its intention to produce only vehicles with automatic transmission in the near future. VW will start with the Tiguan and Passat models, which will no longer be available as manual transmissions. According to information from VW, many Volkswagen customers want to be able to buy more automatic models in the future. The consumption of the vehicles is also much lower with this type of gearbox than with manual gearsticks using the gear stick and clutch pedal.

VW automatic gearbox

VW 7-speed DSG automatic: Volkswagen has been using dual-clutch gearboxes with seven gears in its cars for some time now. This form of automatic transmission consists of two sub-transmissions, each of which is connected via its own clutch. The VW gearboxes, also known as direct shift gearboxes or DSGs, are installed in the Tiguan, Touran, Taigo or T-Cross, depending on the vehicle equipment, as well as in the Golf, Passat and Arteon.

VW 8-speed automatic: In models with high-torque engines, Volkswagen installs automatic transmissions with torque converters and eight gears. Volkswagen commercial vehicles such as the Amarok or the Crafter are equipped with a torque converter automatic from the manufacturer ZF, and an 8-speed automatic gearbox is also used in the VW Touareq as a variant with Tiptronic.

Transmission for VW electric cars

In VW electric vehicles, the gearbox is part of the compact drive units that are installed in the area of the axles. The single-speed gearbox is produced directly together with the drive unit, for example in the VW ID.3 at the Volkswagen plant in Kassel. The ID.4 and ID.5 also have such single-gear transmissions. In the electric car, the gearbox is mainly responsible for balancing the speed of the engine and wheel drive.

Buy and replace a used VW gearbox

If the VW gearbox is defective, it is not always worth repairing the component in older vehicles. Replacing the complete gearbox with a replacement gearbox is often less expensive if the spare part is purchased in good condition at a reasonable price. The necessary gearbox code can be found directly on the Volkswagen gearbox or on the equipment sticker.
