Behind Volvo

The history of Volvo goes all the way back to 1924. Here, the founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson started working on the first Volvo.

In 1927, the factory started to mass-produce cars. The first one was the convertible “ÖV 4”, followed by the closed version “PV 4” the following year. In the first two years, the factory produced almost 1000 cars.

Volvo Car Corporation – which builds Volvo cars – was part of Volvo Group until 1999. Among other things, Volvo Group also makes lorries and buses. In 1999, Volvo Car Corporation was acquired by the Ford Group, which was behind production until 2010.

After prolonged negotiations, Volvo Car Corporation was sold to the Chinese car manufacturer Geely Automobile in 2010.

Current Volvo models

Today, Volvo focuses mostly on larger-sized cars. They have no micro and mini cars and only one single model in the small mid-sized class. The other range consists of cars in the large and upper mid-sized class, as well as several SUVs.

Here is a list of some of the Volvo models that are still in production:

• Volvo V40: V40 is the smallest car in the Volvo range. It is available as a 5-door hatchback and belongs to the small mid-sized class. It is sold with a 4- or 5-cylinder petrol or diesel engine.
• Volvo S60 and V60: The manufacturer’s sedan (S60) and the estate car (V60) in the large mid-sized class. The S60 has been in production since 2000, while the V60 has been available since 2010. It is available with a petrol engine in 4-, 5- or 6-cylinder versions, as well as 5-cylinder diesel engine. The two models are also available in a Cross Country version with a higher undercarriage and four-wheel drive.
• Volvo XC60: The smallest SUV from Volvo is available with and without four-wheel drive. It is also available as a 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engine.
• Volvo S90 and V90: The new car in the luxury car class from Volvo was presented for the first time in 2016. It is available as a 4-door sedan (S90) and a 5-door estate car (V90). A Cross Country version of the V90 with four-wheel drive and a raised undercarriage is also available.
• Volvo XC90: The luxury SUV from Volvo, available since 2002. It comes with an 8-step automatic transmission and is available in several different engine versions. Among others, a 2.0 litre Drive-E hybrid-engine.
